Linnan joined the Hay lab as a postdoctoral researcher in 2001. His project mainly focused on the structural characterization of SUMO specific proteases (SENPs).

He obtained his PhD in biochemistry at East China University of Science and Technology, studying high density cell culture of E.coli for production of recombinant FGF under the supervision of Professor Juntang Yu and Professor Dongzi Wei.
