Designs For Life
Exploring the visualisation of cell and gene research through analysis of a series of image production collaborations and integrated public engagement.
The Concept
Exploring the visualisation of cell and gene research through analysis of a series of image production collaborations and integrated public engagement.
The Collaboration
Designs for Life is a collaborative project between scientists at the Centre and Paul Harrison an artist and researcher at the University of Dundee, Visual Research Centre (VRC) where he co-ordinates and facilitates activity in the print publishing facility.
The Project
The process of image production is the central theme of this project. What is the origin of contemporary bio-data? How much is visual and how are such images processed and introduced to the public domain? How is the visual considered?
This transparent development of laboratory data into image outcomes will reveal aspects of both the physical and intellectual process and provide documentary material for comparison and discussion.
At a time when there is much interest in the potential of ‘sci-art projects’ this project provides an opportunity to engage with the process of cross-disciplinary collaboration, bringing together skills, knowledge and experience from these generally distinct practices and cultures.
Each scientist has worked in the VRC publishing facility towards the development of resolved images based on their own research practice.
The Impact
The Designs for Life projects has generated a series of images which have been brought to public attention through the project website, a public exhibition (VRC Centrespace, 2008), a Symposium, and Education Programme and through a permanent exhibition of the artwork and the Wellcome Trust Building where the Centre for gener regulation and Expression is situated.
The Education Programme includes workshops, projects and events that are uniquely planned and delivered by a dynamic team of professional artists and educators, offering participants an innovative and high quality experience of Designs for Life.
It has also led to Dundee City Council's Leisure & Communities Department commissioning of a new piece of music by innovative a new piece of music by innovative electronic producer Alex Smoke, to be performed by the Scottish Ensemble.
The commission which is ‘a creative response to the ideas & methodologies generated by a Designs for Life, led by artist Paul Harrison was premiered at the project symposium in February 2008.
To ensure a wide community representation to the project, access has been targeted towards local groups, with specific focus on children, young people and Lifelong Learners.
