Abstract:

It can be easy to forget that scientists are, at heart, simply curious people who enjoy apply induction to undercover underlying principles.  When Professor John Parker became the director of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden he observed what no one had before, that there was an unusual pattern in the choice and distribution of the trees.  Intrigued, he and a group of colleagues collected and analysed the relevant data and eventually published a paper in Nature which helps to rewrite the history of how Darwin developed the theory of Evolution.  They had huge fun along the way.  This is that story and, along the way, I’ll talk about data and polyglot persistence.
